Frostbite 25 - 26.11 2006

Warmest "Frostbite" so far

"Global warming" says Al

"Don't believe it" says Georg

Load kayaks

Meet Saturday 25.11 at 10 at Storören to load kayaks on trailer - drive to Pickala Esso for sandwiches - continue westward by ferry over Barösund to Orslandet for launch.

On top of personal gear, food, drink and normal stuff the kayaks swallowed some 70 lbs of birch wood for sauna and fireplaces.

Arrive Äskörn

Easy paddlinng brought group to Äskörn:

Sonja, Tove, Maija, Fredrik, Clas and Dave.

Tom and Göran had landed in advance and watched a deer swim from Äskörn to neighbor island.

Landing at Äskörn

Beach welcomed kayakers as daylight begun to fade by 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

With the power of his brandnew drivers licens Fredrik used one-wheel Land Rower to deliver heavy stuff, including the firewood to their destinations.

Setting the table

Tasks:

Tom and Dave heated the sauuna, Tove & Co started dinner preparations.

Suggestion: Every paddle party should enlist a few experienced girl- and boyscouts.

Sauna schedule: First ladies, then gents.

Purifying rites accomplished dinner was served.

Dinner

Frugal camps OK for Pro Kayakers:

  • Just a hot sauna,
  • followed by cold beer.
  • Simple food OK as long as it's good and abundant.
  • Water for the wise, wine for the rest of us,
  • A comfortable bunk in a warm cottage.

Among friends evening meals may stretch a bit.

Load at Äskörn

With most of the global problems solved during animated after-dinner discussions next paddle started Sunday morning.

Loading space in kayaks grown with no firewood to transport.

Valuables safely stowed.

Trip sandwiches safest of all.

Leaving Äskörn

Good weather and tailwind toward Point of Celebration.

As expected with Doctor of Meteorology, Ambassador of Oklahoma David Schultz on the team.

Lindholms varg

A dark and foggy night almost one houndred years ago local fisherman Lindholm in an agitated mood woke up neighbours to tell there was a wolf on the low rock by Hemholmen.

Dawn of the next morning exposed a boulder on the rock, the boulder since known as "Lindholms wolf".

Passing kayakers are expected to pause and pay their respect to "Lindholms wolf".

Soup

Proper answer to question why anyone would spend a weekend kayaking in late November:

"Had you tasted Tove's Blueberry Soup on on a kayaking break you would know!"

Here Tove serves Blueberry Soup to Clas, Fredrik, Sonja and Dave.

By Force

On his 1:50.000 topo map Tom saw a hitherto unpaddled passage between the island of Lill-Ramsön and unnamed small island.

Tom forced the reed wall with skill and force, others followed each in his/her own style.

The weak in faith used the free water around the small island.

Channel

Last part of Sundays easy 7 miles paddle used the Älgsjölandet channel.

Previous experiences of the channel include:
- one pass by luck as an outboarder hade cut a break in the ice,
- one success by brute force that shortened Toms paddled was by one inch at each end
- one failed attempt: "Channel clogged".

This time we had summer conditions.

Trailer waiting

Back by the Orslandet where the trailer waited.

Automation: Fair maidens smile triggers camera.
